What Is Florida's VPK Program All About?
Florida's Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program helps eligible four-year-olds prepare for kindergarten by building early academic, language, social-emotional, and developmental skills. At the Mandel JCC in Palm Beach Gardens, we build on those goals through hands-on experiences, purposeful play, child-led inquiry, and caring relationships with teachers and classmates.

A VPK Program Designed For Growing Four-Year-Olds With Growing Independence
Four-year-olds are ready to take on the world! This is when they learn to do more for themselves, think more deeply about the world around them, and take greater ownership of their classroom experience. Our VPK program builds on this pivotal stage by giving children meaningful opportunities to investigate questions, make decisions, collaborate with friends, and work through increasingly complex challenges.
We focus on developmental areas that emphasize independence, emotional regulation, cooperative play, motor planning, problem-solving, measurement, patterns, literacy, and numeracy. Teachers create a supportive environment where children can explore ideas in different ways and through multiple senses. Literacy, math, science, creative expression, movement, and social-emotional development are woven naturally throughout the day, helping children connect what they discover with the world around them.
We offer a VPK experience that prepares children for the expectations of kindergarten while protecting something equally important: their curiosity and excitement about discovering something new.

Building Lifelong Skills Through VPK
Early Literacy & Communication
Throughout the VPK year, children strengthen vocabulary, comprehension, early writing, letter recognition, storytelling, and their understanding of how spoken and written language connect.
Early Math & Science
Counting, patterns, measurement, spatial concepts, observation, classification, prediction, and experimentation help children explore how things work and make connections between ideas.
Independence & Responsibility
As children prepare for kindergarten, classroom routines and age-appropriate responsibilities help them manage belongings, complete tasks, make choices, and take greater ownership of their day.
Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking
Children are encouraged to investigate, test ideas, make connections, consider different possibilities, and keep working when the answer isn't immediately obvious.
Social-Emotional Skills
Cooperative experiences help children communicate, negotiate, understand different perspectives, regulate emotions, and build meaningful friendships.
Fine & Gross Motor Skills
Writing, drawing, building, manipulating materials, outdoor play, movement, and other hands-on experiences strengthen coordination, control, and physical confidence.

Kindergarten Readiness That Helps Children Thrive
Alongside letters, numbers, and academic concepts, children need the confidence to try something new, communicate what they're thinking, manage emotions, follow routines, work with others, and keep going when something feels challenging.
At the Barbara & Jack Kay Early Childhood Learning Center, we foster these abilities through everyday experiences. A child might stay focused on a project, explain an idea to a friend, reconsider an approach that didn't work, listen to someone else's perspective, or experience the satisfaction of solving a problem independently.
We nurture:
- Confident communicators who express their ideas, needs, and questions
- Independent thinkers who make choices and explore different approaches
- Creative problem-solvers who think critically and persist through challenges
- Caring classmates who listen, collaborate, negotiate, and show empathy
- Engaged learners who remain curious and eager to investigate the world around them
Our broader educational philosophy emphasizes focus and self-control, communication, perspective-taking, critical thinking, making connections, taking on challenges, and self-directed engagement as important life skills.

Inside Our Palm Beach Gardens VPK Classroom: Empowered Experiences Created Around Curiosity
At four, one good question can lead almost anywhere. Our educators use the Teaching Strategies Gold Curriculum framework while creating child-centered experiences shaped by children's interests, abilities, and developmental needs. Rather than simply giving children answers, teachers create opportunities to investigate, experiment, wonder, create, and discover.
A classroom interest might lead children to books and storytelling one day, building and measurement the next, and art, science, movement, or imaginative play after that. Teachers carefully observe what children are thinking and doing, then introduce materials, questions, and experiences that invite them to take their ideas further.
The classroom itself becomes alive as part of that process. Purposefully selected materials encourage children to make choices, test possibilities, revisit ideas, collaborate with friends, and build confidence as they discover what they can do.

More Ways to Explore, Create & Connect Through VPK Extension Opportunities
Being part of the Barbara & Jack Kay Early Childhood Learning Center means VPK students have opportunities to discover interests beyond their everyday classroom experiences in a family-oriented, welcoming environment.
Enrichment
Art, music, movement, science, creative expression, sensory experiences, and other age-appropriate enrichment opportunities give children new ways to create and discover what excites them.
Outdoor Experiences
Outdoor play and exploration give children room to move, investigate, imagine, collaborate, and experience their environment in new ways.
Community & Connection
School traditions, celebrations, friendships, community events, and shared experiences help children understand that they are part of something bigger than their classroom.

Growing Together as a Family Through the VPK Year
Starting kindergarten is a big milestone for both children and their families.
Throughout the VPK year, our teachers partner with parents to understand each child's strengths, interests, needs, and progress. Open communication and collaboration between home and school create consistency while helping children feel supported as they become more independent.
That sense of connection can continue long after preschool. As part of the Mandel JCC community, families can grow with us through camps, enrichment programs, youth activities, family events, arts and culture, and opportunities to stay connected like our signature JParent program through each new stage of childhood.
