JCC CAMP SHALOM RECEIVES $4,000 DONATION FROM PYTHIAN YOUTH FOUNDATION FOR CAMP TIKVAH, SPECIAL NEEDS PROGRAM
Organization has supported Camp Tikvah for a decade

PALM BEACH GARDENS (July, 2013) – Camp Tikvah, the special needs program at the JCC of the Greater Palm Beach’s Camp Shalom, received a $4,000 donation from the Pythian Youth Foundation, Inc. (PYF). The foundation is the charitable arm of the Knights of Pythias of Florida, an international fraternal organization. This is the tenth consecutive year the KOP has contributed to Camp Tikvah, bringing its total donation to $33,000.

"Over the past decade, the support of the Pythian Youth Foundation has allowed special needs campers at Camp Tikvah to flourish through participating in stimulating programming that;s focused on inclusion with our more than 200 campers," said Mindy Hanken, Mandel JCC director. “Their support has enabled us to better serve and reach the special needs community and is a testament to the quality programming we offer.”

The support of the PYF allows children whose families are in financial need the opportunity to attend this special needs summer camp. Camp Tikvah is held at Camp Shalom in Duncan Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens, and will relocate to the Mandel JCC in Palm Beach Gardens for Summer 2014.  The program provides a summer camp experience for children and teens with varying exceptionalities such as cognitive, emotional, developmental and learning disabilities. Staff embraces each participant’s individuality, and supports campers in their efforts to improve their abilities and achieve their goals.

“We visit Camp Tikvah each year, and are astounded by the progress the campers make each summer. The opportunity for growth here is tremendous, it’s truly a worthy cause to support," said Sir Irv. Margulies, past grand chancellor of Florida and past president of PYF.

The Knights of Pythias was founded in Washington D.C. in 1864. The primary goal of the organization is to express the principles of friendship, charity and benevolence by making contributions to those in financial distress or in the wake of a natural disaster.
