ATHLETE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What are the requirements to participate as a Mandel JCC Maccabi athlete?
A: Jewish athletes between the ages of 13 and 16, as of July 31, 2014 can participate in individual and team sports.
Q: Do I need to be Jewish to participate?
A: Yes, all JCC Maccabi Games athletes must have at least one Jewish parent.
Q: Will there be tryouts for individual sports?
A: No, athletes participating in individual sports will be required to complete the registration process. Only try-outs are required for team sports.
Q: Do I need to be a member of the Mandel JCC to participate?
A: No, this is a community-wide program and everyone who meets the requirements is invited to participate.
Q: Can I try out for more than one sport?
A: Yes, we encourage you to try out for more than one team sport.
Q: Will there be practices?
A: Yes, each coach determines his or her own practice schedule. Typically, there are practices once each team is formed until the end of the school year. Practice sessions resume two weeks prior to the week of the games.
Q: What happens if I attend summer camp?
A: We are aware that many participants attend camp. We do not require athletes to be back in town for the two weeks prior to the Games.
Q: How much does it cost to participate?
A: The fee to participate in the Games will be $1250. In addition, every athlete will be required to sell raffle tickets to support our delegation. Also, tickets can be sold to defray their personal cost to participate in the Games.
Q: What does the fee include?
A: The fee includes your registration to the Games, uniforms, bag, pins, and food for the week (except for host family night), evening social events, transportation, coaching and supervision.
Q: Are you interested in going to the games but do not play a sport?
A: Be a Star Reporter! Star Reporters will be the official news outlet of the JCC Maccabi Games®. As a Star Reporter, you will work with professionals to interview artists & athletes, coaches, Artists in Residence, host families, and everyone involved with the Games.
