Mussar I: The Way of a Higher Self Presented by Temple Israel
Do you have a spiritual practice? Did you know that Judaism has a 1,000 year old spiritual perspective we call Mussar? Mussar is a Jewish movement developed in Eastern Europe in the 19th century in order to assist us in our ethical and spiritual development. Our goal is to reach our highest spiritual potential through living a life of holiness. We will meet together monthly to study individual soul-traits (middot), using material developed by the Mussar Institute. Everyday Holiness, by Alan Morinis, will be the core text of this experience. We will also study in smaller groups or vaadim in preparation for the monthly meetings.

Instructor: Dr. Barry Horowitz is a local physician and has been a Temple Israel member for almost 20 years. He has studied and practiced Mussar for several years and is a graduate of the Mussar Institute’s Manchim course, which teaches how to facilitate a Mussar group. For the past four years, Dr. Horowitz has facilitated a similar course of study.

Jewish Views on Life, Death, and Afterlife
There is no greater question than that of life and death. Maimonides and Nachmanides: Their Lives and Work
There is an adage, “From Moses to Moses no one arose like Moses.” The first Moses refers to Moses of the Bible, the second to Moses Ben Maimon (Maimonides), who is known as the father of rationalist Judaism. The adage reflects the great esteem in which Maimonides, an expert in Jewish law and philosophy, the top medical practioner in Egypt, mathematician, and scientist has been held through the ages. Rabbi Moshe Ben Nachman (Ramban-Nachmanides), renowned as a bearer of the torch of the mystical tradition and a leader of Jewry, was arguably the next greatest Spanish scholar after Maimonides. This course will delve into the personal life, societal influences, literary work, and unique position in the chain of Jewish tradition of these two men.

Instructor: Rabbi Barak Bar-Chaim is the rabbi of New Synagogue of Palm Beach. He has lectured to diverse audiences in South Africa and the United States. Rabbi Bar-Chaim has touched many with his warm, non-judgmental personal.
