Mussar I: The Way of a Higher Self Presented by Temple Israel
Do you have a spiritual practice? Did you know that Judaism has a 1,000 year old spiritual perspective we call Mussar? Mussar is a Jewish movement developed in Eastern Europe in the 19th century in order to assist us in our ethical and spiritual development. Our goal is to reach our highest spiritual potential through living a life of holiness. We will meet together monthly to study individual soul-traits (middot), using material developed by the Mussar Institute. Everyday Holiness, by Alan Morinis, will be the core text of this experience. We will also study in smaller groups or vaadim in preparation for the monthly meetings.

Instructor: Dr. Barry Horowitz is a local physician and has been a Temple Israel member for almost 20 years. He has studied and practiced Mussar for several years and is a graduate of the Mussar Institute’s Manchim course, which teaches how to facilitate a Mussar group. For the past four years, Dr. Horowitz has facilitated a similar course of study.

> Mondays; Oct 13, Nov 10, Dec 15, Jan 12, Feb 9, Mar 9 and Apr 13
   7:00-8:30 pm

Crossing the Line – Israel as a Jewish Democratic State
Jews are no stranger to controversy. So it stands to reason that a nation founded on Jewish and democratic issues would have no shortage of provocative events. By exploring the boundaries within the Israeli democracy, for example, the assassination of Ytzhak Rabin, the Marmara flotilla with Hanin Zubai an Israeli Arab parliament member, ”CACH” political party, and more controversial issues, we will have to ask ourselves at what point is freedom no longer free and how far is too far.

Instructors: Shani and Nir Boneh are Israeli newlyweds whose mission is to bring their love and knowledge of Israel to all of Jewish Palm Beach. They are community Shlichim (volunteer emissaries) Israel Educators working at the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County as a “home base” to the living bridge they represent with our sister region in Israel’s Tzahar Region.

> Monday; Nov 10; 2:00-3:00 pm
