Mussar I: The Way of a Higher Self Presented by Temple Israel
Do you have a spiritual practice? Did you know that Judaism has a 1,000 year old spiritual perspective we call Mussar? Mussar is a Jewish movement developed in Eastern Europe in the 19th century in order to assist us in our ethical and spiritual development. Our goal is to reach our highest spiritual potential through living a life of holiness. We will meet together monthly to study individual soul-traits (middot), using material developed by the Mussar Institute. Everyday Holiness, by Alan Morinis, will be the core text of this experience. We will also study in smaller groups or vaadim in preparation for the monthly meetings.

Instructor: Dr. Barry Horowitz is a local physician and has been a Temple Israel member for almost 20 years. He has studied and practiced Mussar for several years and is a graduate of the Mussar Institute’s Manchim course, which teaches how to facilitate a Mussar group. For the past four years, Dr. Horowitz has facilitated a similar course of study.

Israel’s Defense Forces- IDF Not Only An Army
For a country the size of New Jersey, with a livable area the size of Rhode Island, Israel has had to endure more battles and strategic operations than any nation in its teenage years should. By examining wars and covert operations, we will learn about a nation and an army who has had to keep developing defense technology for its existence, and about the importance of the IDF’s role in modern Israeli society.

Instructor: Shani and Nir Boneh are Israeli newlyweds whose mission is to bring their love and knowledge of Israel to all of Jewish Palm Beach. They are community Shlichlim (volunteer emissaries) Israel educators working at the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County as a “home base” to the living bridge they represent with our sister region in Israel’s TZAHAR Region. The couple met at and graduated from Ben-Gurion University in the Negev, where they majored in Israeli and Jewish history, and Middle Eastern Affairs and Education.

American Presidents & Jews: For, Against, or Apathetic?
Dr. David Dalin examines the role and experience of Jews in various presidential administrations from Abraham Lincoln to Barack Obama, and the relationship of some of these presidents to the American Jewish community at large, including presidential views and policies on issues of Jewish interest and concern, especially Israel.  Some attention is given to the growing controversy and debate over the role of  President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his administration during the Holocaust.  Dr. Dalin will also discuss the role that Jews have played in the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations. The talk concludes with a brief discussion of the Jewish vote and issues of Jewish concern in the presidential election of 2012,  and of the Jewish community’s continuing interest in and concern about the Obama administration’s policies toward Israel, and President Obama’s relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
