What's in a Name?
By how many names have you been called during your lifetime? How do names reflect differences in your relationships with others...in how you perceive yourself or how others perceive you? In this class, we will explore unusual evidence to speculate that three first century historians writing to three distinct populations- the Jews, the new Christians, and the Romans-may in fact have been one and the same person. The writings of these three men became the bedrock upon which both rabbinic Judaism and Christianity developed following the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 CE. The words written for the Roman audience became one of the only histories we have about events during the turn of the first century CE. If it were ever proved that these three writers were indeed the same person, we may then contemplate a most profound meaning of the phrase, “the pen is mightier than the sword.”
Session 1: Introduction to names/appellations aliases; meet Saul, Paul, Yochanan Ben Zakai, Flavius Josephus and their writing
