Jewish Musical Journeys
Instructor: Cantor Danielle Bensimhon, Temple Beth David

Place six Jews in a room together, they will talk politics, challenge each other’s intelligence, they might even feel each other’s pockets for weight and jingle, but when a niggun-a wordless melody-arises from the chatter, the energy steadies, the challenge ends, a connection between the individuals deepens, and often, the people will join together in song. Individually and universally we continually strive to repair the world, to mend the brokenness-tikkun olam. Music, and for Jews-Jewish music, has the power to open blockages, re- establish connections, heal brokenness, and move people in ways they never thought were possible. In this class we will explore and experience, learn and listen to, and enjoy the gift of Jewish music, which has changed with the times. We will begin with the Mt. Sinai tunes-the oldest known melodies we know, travel through the old classic favorites from our liturgy, and end in the present day with contemporary composers. Participants will be encouraged to bring along their new and old favorites to share with others and new melodies will be introduced during each session.

Danielle Bensimhon, the dynamic Cantor of Temple Beth David on Hood Road, is originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania. She holds an undergraduate degree from Oberlin and two master’s degrees from the Jewish Theological Seminary. Cantor Bensimhon has taught in camps, hospitals, synagogues, and at conferences throughout the country. Her warmth and exuberance is contagious.
